Cauny x Siza Vieira

The Cauny Siza is a watch collection designed by world-renowned Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, one of the most celebrated figures in contemporary architecture and the first to inaugurate The Architects of Time series.

For Siza, design is not about excess or novelty for its own sake, but about clarity and essence. As he once said, “The history of watch design is the history of millions of new models and continuous changes. I followed that path with the purpose of making this transformation not imperceptible, and also that this watch would ‘look’ like a watch — in the same way that I think a chair should ‘look’ like a chair and an automobile should ‘look’ like an automobile. For what is new need not be an aggression.”

This philosophy guided every decision in the creation of the Cauny Siza: a timepiece that rejects the unnecessary and celebrates proportion, silence and timelessness. Even the hands end with a subtle opening — a symbol of time as a lived interval rather than a mechanical sequence.

The collaboration between Cauny and Álvaro Siza emerged naturally: a brand based in Portugal joining forces with Portugal’s most acclaimed architect. The result is a watch that feels both new and eternal — a design that, like Siza’s buildings, stands quietly and confidently against the passage of time.

Author's note

Siza about his own watch:

"Designing a wrist watch in dialogue with Filipe Costa Almeida was for me a beautiful and stimulating exercise. A dialogue in presence, looking at other watches produced by Cauny, made of different choices and an attention to the comments and suggestions over what
was right or not.

The history of watch design is also the history of millions of new models and continuous changes.I followed that path with the purpose of making this transformation not imperceptible, and also that this watch would “look” like a watch, in the same way that i think a chair should “look” like a chair and an automobile should “look” like an automobile. For what is new need not be an aggression - and that is not always the case.
