Cauny x Souto Moura

The Cauny Souto de Moura is a watch collection designed by Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, winner of the 2011 Pritzker Prize. In the design of this watch, Souto de Moura set three clear goals: the dial must display the time with absolute clarity, the case must be “as thin as possible”, and there must be no gaps between the strap and the case. These three design criteria — clarity, slenderness, and integration — give rise to an object of rare elegance. The polished case combines brushed steel along the sides, the slightly domed sapphire gives depth, and the German leather strap merges seamlessly with the case — not as an accessory appended, but as part of the whole. On top of this foundations, Souto Moura then played with an inner reflecting ring, as well as with the use of Roman numerals, where the axes form an architectural reference to number one.

The result is a timepiece that, like Souto de Moura’s buildings, stands by subtlety, proportion and intentional functionality. For those who value design worn on the wrist — and time lived with awareness — the Cauny Souto de Moura is more than a watch: it is architecture in miniature, in a gesture of lasting elegance.

Brief biography

Eduardo Souto Moura nasce em 1952 no Porto, onde vive até hoje. Licenciou-se pela Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto, e aprendeu com dois mestres essenciais em todo o seu percurso: Fernando Távora e Álvaro Siza.

A sua obra é vasta e passa tanto por casas particulares como por edifícios públicos. Das primeiras ficaram famosas as vivendas no Porto, na Serra da Arrábida ou em Moledo. Já entre os edifícios de maior dimensão, projetou o Estádio Municipal de Braga, que é para muito o mais belo estádio de futebol do mundo. Ainda nesse domínio, contam-se obras tão marcantes quanto a Casa das Artes e a Torre do Burgo, no Porto, A Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, em Cascais, e o Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, em Londres, entre tantas outras.

Souto Moura combinou também a sua excecional capacidade de comunicação, sede de conhecimento e sentido humor numa longa carreira académica, que o levou a ensinar em várias universidades pelo mundo fora. A Faculdade de Arquitectura de Paris-Belleville, as escolas de Arquitectura de Harvard e de Dublin, a ETH de Zurich e a Escola de Arquitectura de Lausanne servem de exemplo.

O prémio Pritzker, atribuído em 2011, veio coroar uma longa lista de prémios e reconhecimentos internacionais, aos quais se juntou o Leão de Ouro da Bienal de Veneza, em 2018.
